Choosing a truck
What is the difference between 6×4 and 8×4?
The first number is the number of wheel positions and the second is how many are driven. A 6×4 has three axles with two driven. An 8×4 has four axles with two driven, which spreads the load over more axles.
What is the difference between a tipper and a cargo truck?
A tipper has a body that tilts hydraulically to unload loose bulk material. A cargo truck carries general freight in a load body and does not tip.
What is a tractor head?
A tractor head, also called a prime mover, is the pulling unit of an articulated truck. It couples to a semi-trailer through a fifth wheel.
How do GVW, GCW and payload differ?
GVW is the maximum weight of a rigid truck including its load. GCW is the maximum weight of a tractor head and its trailer together. Payload is the load that can be carried, roughly the GVW minus the empty weight of the vehicle. Manufacturer figures are not automatically the legal operating load in Kenya.
